In the distant future, humanity has been driven nearly to extinction by giant beasts called klaxosaurs, forcing the surviving humans to take refuge in giant fortified cities called Plantations. Here the grown-ups are trained in boy-girl pairs to pilot giant mecha, known as Frankxx – the only weapon known to be effective against Klaxosaurs. Raised for the sole purpose of piloting these machines, these children know nothing of the outside world and are only able to prove their survival by defending their race.

Hiro, an aspiring FranXX pilot, has lost his motivation and confidence after failing his qualification exam. Skipping his class’ graduation ceremony, Hiro goes to a forest lake, where he encounters a mysterious girl with two horns sprouting from her head.

She introduces herself by her codename Zero Two, that of the infamous FranXX pilot known as the “Partner Killer”. Before Hiro can digest the encounter, the plantation is suddenly rocked by a Klaxosaur attack. Zero Two engages the creature in his FrankX, but it is heavily damaged in the skirmish and crashes near Hiro.

Finding his comrade dead, Zero invites Two Hiro to pilot the mecha with him, and the pair easily defeat Klaxosaur in the ensuing battle. With a new partner by his side, Hiro is given the chance to atone for his past failures, but at what cost? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
