In September 1998, a series of seemingly random suicides left Japan perplexed and devastated. But a detective agency specializing in paranormal events notices that there are some stark and disturbing similarities between the deceptively unrelated cases: all of the victims are schoolgirls, and all of them jumped to their deaths from the top of the old Fujou Building, a skyscraper that should soon be bulldozed.

To investigate the cause of these disturbing events, the head of the agency, the mage Touko Aozaki, sends Mikiya Kokutou and Shiki Ryougi. The kind and surprisingly normal Mikiya contrasts sharply with the cold and mysterious Shiki, who possesses the “mystical eyes of death perception”: an abnormal ability that allows her to see and end all things.
