In the last century, an unprecedented disaster known as invertia greatly improved the world. The powers of the existing nations declined significantly, paving the way for a group called the Integrated Empire Foundation to take control. But more importantly, Invertia spawned a new species of humans who are born with unprecedented physical abilities—Genestella. Its elite are chosen from around the world to attend the top six schools, and they duel among themselves in a battle of entertainments called festas. Ayato Amagiri is a scholarship transfer student at the prestigious Seidokan Academy, which has been suffering from declining performance recently. Through a series of events, he accidentally sees the popular Witch of Desperate Flames, Julis-Alexia von Reisfeld, half-dressed! Enraged, Julis challenges him to a duel in order to infiltrate his privacy. After the student council president calls off the duel, Ayato reveals that he is not interested in Festas. Instead, he enrolls in the academy to investigate the whereabouts of his missing older sister.
