Self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe rents a room in an old old building in Akihabara, where he indulges himself in his hobby of inventing potential “gadgets of the future” with fellow lab members: Mayuri Shiana, His Hawaiian-born childhood friend, and Hashida Itaru, a perverted hacker nicknamed “Daru”. The trio pass the time by tinkering with their most promising contraption ever, a machine called the “Phone Microwave”, which performs the strange task of turning bananas into a pile of green gel.

While this in itself is miraculous, the event provides nothing concrete in Okabe’s quest for scientific breakthrough; That is, unless members of the lab are propelled into action by a string of mysterious events before stumbling upon an unexpected breakthrough—the phone microwave can send emails to the past, changing the flow of history. Adapted from the critically acclaimed visual novel by 5pb. and Nitroplus, Steins; Gate takes Okabe through the depths of scientific theory and pragmatism.
