Turu Honda has always been fascinated by the story of the Chinese zodiac that his beloved mother told him as a child. However, a sudden family tragedy turns her life around, and subsequent circumstances leave her alone. Turu is now forced to live in a tent, but little does he know that his temporary home resides on the private property of the respected Souma family. Stumbling upon their house one day, she meets Shigure, an older Souma cousin, and Yuki, the “prince” of her school.

Toru explains that she lives nearby, but Souma eventually discovers her secret to homelessness when they see her on her way back to their tent one night. Things start to look up for Turu as they kindly offer to pick him up after hearing about his condition. But soon after, she gets caught up in a fight between Yuki and her hot-tempered cousin, Kyu. While trying to stop them, she learns that the Souma family has a hidden secret of their own: whenever they are embraced by a member of the opposite sex, they transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac.
